Our History:
Safe Harbor Community Church was started in New Albany, Indiana with just a few people in a home of one of our members, Doris Lemke, in 2004. From there, the church moved to Linden Ave in New Albany to a beautiful old church that was once pastored by Senior Pastor Rich Poe’s father. However, SHCC only met there for a short amount of time when a fire broke out leaving the SHCC without a building. After the fire, SHCC moved to Charlestown Road where it remained until December 2012.
In 2012, as we were outgrowing our current location, Pastor Rich started looking around for a new, permanent location. He saw that the building that formerly housed George Rogers Clark Elementary School was for sale. Knowing that our congregation was small, he didn’t give it much thought since the building was much bigger than what we needed at the time. He did however continue to pray for God to open doors for us to find a new building. As Pastor Rich prayed, he felt like God was telling him not to put limits on what The Lord could do. We serve an awesome and powerful God who sometimes has bigger plans for us than we could ever dream. With that in mind, the church decided to make an offer on the building for about one third of the asking price, knowing that we would need God to intervene on our behalf if there was any hope of it being accepted. Our offer was accepted just a short time later and we officially moved in to our current location in December 2012.
We believe that God has His hand on SHCC and has directed our path from our inception. He is continually doing miracles with Safe Harbor and we are so thankful that His mercies are new everyday!
